TASTING NOTES

The Ataraxia Sauvignon Blanc favours minerality ahead of pure, pungent fruit. There is an athleticism and linearity to this crisp, mineral driven wine where the texture is more important than the fruit. Tangy & vibrant on the palate, with hints of passionfruit and citrus with great acidity. A versatile companion to many different foods.

PRODUCER PROFILE

Located in the Hemel-en-Aarde on petrified sand dunes, Ataraxia was founded in 2004 by husband and wife team Kevin and Han Ii Grant. A former Zoologist, Kevin spent years getting to know the intricacies of Hemel-en-arde’s terroir as head winemaker of Hamilton Russell. Ataraxia is a deeply personal project for Kevin: along with some dear friends, hepurchased SO hectares of prime vineyard land. The name Ataraxia is “a term used to describe emotional tranquillity” explains Kevin. His approach to winemaking is minimalist and noninterventionist, geared to reflect a sense of place and expression of terroir.

VINEYARD & VINIFICATION

The vineyards are nestled on a commanding rise beneath the soaring Babylons Toren mountain range, known as ‘The Skyfields’, and are planted on some of the most spectacular terroir South Africa has to offer. Planted at 395m above sea level and subject to a cooling maritime climate, the vineyards are planted on a granitic sandstone. Viticultural practices are managed under environmentally sensitive principles.
The Sauvignon Blanc was fermented in stainless steel tanks. The fermentation was carefully temperature controlled, using selected yeasts. With no additional aging the wine was bottled and released to be enjoyed at its fresh, crisp best.
